Blood Pressure Medication Success Tied To Weight

The findings of a new study have revealed that weight is a crucial factor when it comes to prescribing medication to manage blood pressure. It is so important in fact, that it can lower your chances of having a heart attack, stroke or dying. In this new study, researchers reveal that the bodies of lean and obese people go through different responses to blood pressure medication, and they believe the new findings will change the way that blood pressure is treated in the future. Clinics in Las Vegas offer a range of medications and treatment programs to manage blood pressure at cost effective prices.

The surprising results that came from the study included the fact that overweight and obese people have a better chance of responding to blood pressure medication, when compared to leaner people, according to the researchers from the State University of New York in New York City. The lead researcher said that now people have the option of using blood pressure medication that makes up for the weight differences between being fat and thin.

He also recommends, based on the findings from the study, that treatment for high blood pressure is commenced with a course of calcium channel blockers, which have proven to be suitable for all weights. Diuretics, by contrast, are most effective at treating high blood pressure in overweight people, but can cause adverse effects in thin people because of the differences in fluid levels. He says that diuretics should be relegated to a third line of treatment in leaner patients.

In obese people, hypertension is usually caused by a combination of extra weight, too much salt and too much fluid. In thin people, hypertension may be caused by underlying problems in the circulatory system that will not necessarily respond positively to treatment with diuretics.

The revelations were made in the wake of a study consisting of 11 000 international participants. The study compared the effects of calcium channel blockers and diuretics with an ACE Inhibitor to see which combination was most effective in blood pressure control. The participants were split into three groups: normal weight, over weight and obese. Diuretics showed a 68 per cent greater chance of death, stroke or heart attack in leaner people. Those with normal BMIs, taking the calcium channel blocker and ACE inhibitor showed a 43 per cent reduction in stroke, heart attack and death rate.
